men being praised for writing women better than usual is so diabolically funny

So, they *do* talk about Malantho. She doesn't get to defend herself, but I think it's Antinous who essentially says "Why would she be loyal to a master she never knew?" and "Servants are loyal to the future, not the last." Something like that. It makes Malantho's "betrayal" seem like a rational choice, guided by circumstance.

I’ve always felt Nolan writes women as vessels for men’s emotions

I heard he used Emily Wilson's translation. If that's true, it makes sense why the women are better written.

Everyone should read the Margaret Atwood version called the Penelopliad which is the story told from Penelope’s perspective. It’s amazing.

I feel like the women were used as more of a plot device in Odysseus’s story, rather than having their own stories explored like how they are in the book. Which is unfortunate. I especially don’t like that Athens is highly underused.

Nolan writing women better than ever before is setting the bar in hell to jump over.

The man was emotional and crying 24/7 and would really only react when his strength was put into question I remember thinking that Matt Damon isn’t an emotional kinda guy like the only time I’ve seen him cry was good will hunting😳

The Odyssey is the male version of the recent Wuthering Heights film… just fanfiction by directors.

truly really what was the point of making such a fuss of using the wilson translation if you’re gonna go and do this

People need to stop looking at Greek stories in a Western Heroic lens. There doesn't need to be a good guy and a bad guy.

i find it so funny how the (yt male) director ‘goats’ receive praise for writing women… just somewhat well.

So pretty much Nolan tried to romanticize Odysseus right?? Honestly I expected that, I don't think there's any director that would make an Odyssey how it's really written because they're afraid it wouldn't sell as much

This was always my fear with Nolan doing The Odyssey. Yes Odysseus is a complex character traumatised by years of war, but to paint him as the hero is so lazy and disingenuous.

I've stopped watching Nolan movies for this very reason unfortunately. He's not a character driven director/writer, and if the men aren't well written, imagine the women...

ngl, women being simultaneously written well and terribly may be one of the most faithful part of the adaptation lmaoo

Nolan on average treats women like decorations or plot devices, so the bar is on the floor

That's honestly wild that he cut the killing of the slaves while using Emily Wilson's translation

What happened to the slave girls in the source material always upset me as a modern woman, but slaves in Bronze Age Greece and how they were treated, how they were considered, is so far removed from 21st century thinking about humanity, that its hard for us to comprehend.

It just strikes me that Nolan’s “translation” of Odysseus feels/sounds more in line with the view he has of himself more than his translation of the character. Having the entire movie not only b the 1st ever completely filmed in IMAX, have an entire new IMAX camera made (Trojan horse filled with celebs) but he completely refuses 2 recognise it’s a fruitless war & pretends he’s doing it 4 the ppl. Despite there only being approx 40 cinemas WW that will b able 2 offer the heroic feat that he’s pulled off

War creates an eternal ripple effect of tragedy in its wake. So, based purely on what you’ve shared, leaving out the parts of the story that show stuff like you’ve stated, means we don’t see this impact on the innocent and on the implicated.

Brilliant review tackling women roles. Nolan’s Oppenheimer was the same - male gaze, women were somewhat one dimensional. Oppenheimer was aloof and the women around him were only peripherial. And in fact , minimised Oppenheimers’s own emotional weight .
