The Falklands Banner Controversy Explained ⚠️ A banner saying: “Las Malvinas argentinas” meaning “The Falklands are Argentine” created a debate after appearing during football celebrations. As some Argentina players took it from some fans in the stadium and were waving it around in celebration after beating England 2-1 to make the World Cup final. The Falklands/Malvinas issue has been disputed between the UK and Argentina for decades, with the islands currently under UK control. After a 2013 referendum, 98.8% of the Falklands population voted to remain part of the UK. A spokesperson for the Prime Minister has said, “The World Cup might not be ours, but the Falklands definitely are,” and has also backed the idea of FIFA investigating the team for displaying the banner as a breach of the rules.” To add to the context, in August 2024 Spanish stars Rodri and Alvaro Morata were banned for one match for singing "Gibraltar is Spain” which is similar to the Argentine players saying “Falklands are Argentine". They gave us yellows for wearing poppies…I feel like Spain got a match ban for something similar everyone that had hands on that banner should get a red…I think 2nd should go to the winner of France and England (probably France 😂)
