I would argue that the two points of the hat imply horns, and the horns being crooked on his head suggests that everything is crooked about him, metaphorically speaking.

I feel like the trail of gold coins is a trap. You find a free gold coin and you want more and keep walking and picking them up. Then this “kind” looking man is holding the last one. Inviting you to take it. Greed will be your downfall.
