You can use and abuse me at clinicals… as a NURSING student. Not as a CNA. Don’t get me wrong, I WILL help the CNAs, but I am there to learn how to be a nurse - not to do CNA work.

Hands on nursing work? I was alllllll for. But clinical would put me to work as a free CNA for 12 hrs 2-3x a week and that used to make me so mad 😭

One day in clinicals our instructor told us to go answer call bells etc and I politely said, I was a cna for 8 years I don’t need to be taught to be one, and I’m not doing the cna job when there were 3 literally sitting down eating chips and talking about their weekend. I said why should I pay 45k to go do their job while they get paid to sit. Idk what the idea is but when they see nursing students they think that is what they’re there to do. We pay to learn to be a NURSE. Of course I still do “cna” work as a nurse but if there’s opportunities to learn nursing skills I should be doing that. Nursing students are not free labor

I think some of the comments are acting oblivious to what she means. While you do learn by doing tasks however, if you’re too busy doing tech work to the point you not sure what the client has going on, that’s a problem.

I remember during one of my clinical rotations, the floor was down a pct and the Charge nurse came to my preceptor and said “Can your student do the vitals for the floor since we’re down a pct?”. My nurse looked at her and said “Nope. She can do the vitals for our four pts, not the entire floor.” My nurse told me that I’m not there to do pct work the entire day. I’m there to learn how to be a nurse. I was so thankful 🥲 😂

Hospitals cannot legally use students to cover staffing deficiencies. It’s nice when that are on the floor and can be helpful but they are not free labor

They tried to make me be a sitter one time. I’m a nurse now and LOVE students and I LOVE being the nurse that nursing students tell each other to ask for. 🩷

Going through my first clinical rotation and we are doing base CNA work. Don’t get me wrong I KNOW it’s important. But I already am a CNA. I want a nurse to show me their med passes or wound cleaning or something.

I can’t STAND going yo clinical to learn how to be a nurse and literally doing CNA work all day. I am a CNA. I know these things, I do these things. I want to learn NEW things for being a NURSE. I will do ALL the nurse things I can possibly do, but CNA work? No.

Umm “our work” IS how you learn 🙄😒 You have to be HANDS ON, to be a nurse. Reading a book and standing on the sidelines will get you no where!
