Why did you leave out Thailand? On December 8, 1941, Prime Minister Plaek Phibunsongkhram surrendered to the Japanese invasion within just 5 hours, signing a pact that turned Thailand into a puppet state. King Ananda Mahidol (Rama VIII) was kept as a puppet king while Tokyo pulled all the strings from behind. The Thai government was forced to declare war on the Allies and hand over its entire infrastructure so Japan could invade Burma and Malaya. Furthermore, Japan seized control of the central bank and plundered Thailand’s rice and rubber, leaving them with zero economic independence. Even in 1944, when Phibun tried to step back, Japan orchestrated the installment of Khuang Aphaiwong as the new prime minister to maintain their tight grip. They were completely a puppet from start to finish, so Thailand definitely belongs on this list.
