@adauretherealauntie_talk: @Elvira Styles♡Gen Z Journalist Thanks for speaking on this. This particular conversation isn’t about blaming African parents—However, it is about understanding how poverty, trauma and mental health can shape behaviours that get passed from one generation to the next. I grew up with some of these habits, and I found myself repeating them without even realising it. Healing doesn’t mean rejecting your culture. It means recognising which survival mechanisms no longer serve you. As the Black Sheep, that’s one of the hardest things you’ll ever do. Do you think there’s a connection between mental health and hoarding, or am I reaching? Let’s discuss respectfully in the comments.👇🏾 #MentalHealthAwareness #Hoarding #nigeriantiktok #africanparents #GenerationalTrauma

My mum clears up every August. She says if you take a whole year without using something, then you don't need it. Give it away.

Growing up in an African hoarder house literally gave me PTSD, it made me a minimalist, I hate clutter, mess, dirt and things out of order, now I even get triggered by busy curtains or wallpapers. I don’t want to see anything laying around or out of place!! Every surface needs to be empty!! My friends say my house is empty and I say “THATS EXACTLY HOW I WANT IT”

Financial crisis keh? These people had to grow up during wars and coups. Times when Nigeria and west Africa was unstable. So Hoarding becomes a source a wealth. Why is it so difficult? If you grew up for Nigeria, you’ll understand

I’ve become minimalist. I only keep what I need and give away what I don’t. I feel this cycle brings and keeps abundance I my life.

our parents are the generation who never took the time to self reflect and go to therapy. I think its safe to say this hoarding is corresponding to their accumulated unresolved traumas
