It is totally fine to text your therapist IF the therapist says so. Mine encourages me to text her if I need something. Our interaction relatively brief and she doesn’t always get back to me right away, but she doesn’t mind and therefore it is totally OK.

Uh, therapist here. I’m more than willing to engage with my clients during normal hours with the understanding that I’m not a crisis hotline and only during acute situations.

This is the danger of social media. “DO NOT TEXT YOUR THERAPIST” as a hook is attention-grabbing, sure, but so misleading (and potentially harmful). It isn’t illegal or unethical to text your therapist when you have co-created a therapeutic relationship where the provider is OK with some communications beyond logistics. It depends on the kind of relationship you have built over the years. I still email my first therapist from when I was 19 (maybe every year or every other year) with an update about my life and photos. Both of my therapists, whom I correspond with in a more open-ended manner, have been in practice for over 45 years and would have no issue setting a boundary. Being able to reach out to your therapist is part of the healing process, as long as it’s not excessive or unreasonable.

My therapist uses a secure messaging site and sometimes I’ll send her my thought spirals on there but she doesn’t respond we talk about them during session because I’ll often forget when the moment comes

I never text my therapist. Only email if something comes up that I want to address in a session. I don't want to have a social relationship with my therapist. She's amazing, she's changed my life but she is not my friend and I LOVE having that boundary
