Before drifting became a professional sport, the scene looked very different. Some photos follows Team Risky on a touge outside Tokyo. Around ten cars met at a closed restaurant before heading into the mountains. Ken drove a red widebody S15 built specifically for touge use, while the team leader brought a 400+ hp SR20-powered 180SX with an OS Giken close-ratio gearbox. After a few test runs and tire changes, six cars headed out in formation onto an open road with normal traffic still using the pass. The other photos takes place at Nanko Minami near Osaka. By 1:19 AM the area was already packed with drift cars, spectators and traffic. Fresh cars like a JZX110 Mark II shared the road with battered S-Chassis and RX-7s covered in drift team stickers. One RX-7 eventually clipped the gutter and ended up in a palm tree, though thankfully both occupants were okay. The touge footage shows the organized side of early drifting. Nanko shows the chaotic side.
