A Florida mother is accused of causing fatal head injuries to her 3-month-old son after investigators say her diamond ring matched the shape of one of the impact injuries found on his skull. Jessica Vlasac, 42, is facing aggravated child abuse charges in connection with the death of her infant son. According to the Polk County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded to a Lakeland home shortly before midnight on Sept. 6 after the baby was found unresponsive. Paramedics rushed the boy to a hospital, where doctors pronounced him dead. He had an abrasion and bruising on his head. Vlasac reportedly told deputies, “I think I killed our son,” but initially claimed she had accidentally fallen asleep with him. She said that when she woke up, the baby was face down on the bed, not moving and cold to the touch. The autopsy reportedly revealed a different story. The medical examiner found subdural hemorrhaging and three separate impact injuries to the baby’s head. One injury on his forehead appeared to have been caused by a square-shaped object. During their interview with Vlasac, detectives noticed she was wearing a large diamond-like ring. Investigators said its shape matched the object indicated by the autopsy. The medical examiner later determined that the ring caused the impact injuries. When deputies confiscated it, Vlasac reportedly asked whether it was the object that had caused her son’s de*th. People inside the home told investigators that Vlasac had been alone caring for the baby when they heard screaming. The child’s father also told police that Vlasac “becomes violent” when she drinks. He said she told him she had purchased booze around noon that day. According to investigators, Vlasac later sent the father multiple messages saying she had k!lled the infant and that he was d3ad. Some of those messages were reportedly deleted. Even more disturbing, police said she called the father several days later and sounded “unusually normal” while talking about their son. Vlasac was arrested Thursday and remains in the Polk County Jail without bond. A pretrial detention hearing is scheduled for Thursday, with her arraignment set for Oct. 13.
