If you were to change the First Amendment, Christians would once again engage in Christians vs. Christains violence to determine who should rule, as they always have. The Founding Fathers observed violence among various Christian groups and declared, "Enough." By the late 1700s, Americans had witnessed numerous conflicts, including: Puritans executing Quakers, Protestants overthrowing Catholics in Maryland, Anglicans suppressing Baptists, Presbyterians fighting Anglicans on the frontier, anti-Catholic riots, and laws that forced individuals to pay taxes to churches they did not belong to. These events convinced leaders like Madison, Jefferson, and Franklin that combining government and religion was dangerous. The First Amendment, ratified in 1791, famously states: “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof.” This amendment established two key principles: No establishment: The government cannot create a national church, force religious taxes, or grant legal privileges to any particular denomination.
