@cnn: Childcare costs are pushing families to the brink. Parents pay more than they can afford, providers lose money and teachers earn too little to stay — forcing many families to ask how many kids they can afford to have. In this episode of Priced Out in America, CNN's Phil Mattingly speaks to a family in the greater Boston area, who at one point, was paying nearly $10K a month for childcare for their three children.

This is dishonest reporting cnn. This family lives in a $1.7mil house in a fancy suburb of Boston. Something is not being told about their personal circumstances. CNN could have very easily found a family who is actually struggling to interview.

Before I became a nurse I worked at a Montessori preschool and they had me making $8 an hour while families were paying $2,500-3,500 a month per kid. I asked for a raise once when we were in a family crisis and they literally laughed at me.

The richest person in the state could pay for 1 year of universal childcare for the entire state and they would still have 28 billion leftover. Or 28,000 million. This is a policy choice and failure.

I’ll never understand why some parents won’t find jobs with opposite shifts. I know it’s not ideal but they could care for their own.

I don’t live in Massachusetts, but anyone with an eyes and reads know that Massachusetts has the highest childcare costs and highest cost of living in the nation. The boomers in here saying they need a smaller house etc…are so out of touch with the reality of the cost of living. This is the reality of America our wages are not matching the bills…you need two incomes to survive. Also, this is why schools are closing people cannot afford to have children. So in turn less children in the classroom. I don’t know what the fix of this problem is…but this IS the problem of America. And no one wants to tackle this problem…so it will continue. And our population will go down.

Hi 👋 it’s me and @walkntours that ya’ll are making assumptions about. We appreciate those that have offered kind words and similar situations. I totally understand why many of you question our life choices! Ahhh ME TOO!! This clip doesn’t tell the whole story so at the cost of being (more) vulnerable, let me share a little … we were THRIlLED with the 1st kid we got after years of IVF (which turned out to be twins😱) and then when I was unexpectedly pregnant after years of infertility (at age 38 no less!) we were not going to not have that baby. (Don’t worry we’ve made permanent adjustments to guarantee there won’t be a 4th 😉) As for why doesn’t someone stay home!? WE CANT! We’re both self-employeed. I left the corporate world before Covid to pursue art! I do community projects and teach classes. Greg is building a self-guided walking/driving tours app and it’s FREAKING COOL!! Neither of us could stay home because a 5 year pause on building your own thing is not an option. We cut as many expenses as possible and just chose to believe that this will work out. 5 years of no vacations, limited extracurriculars, no mindless spending, burning through savings with a little extra debt has been worth it. We are so thankful for all we have and are building together. Not to mention our mental health and marriage stayed strong because of our decision to both keep working. If you’re looking for a unique team building activity for your office or a meaningful project at school, think of me! Sowamosaics.com. If you love discovering new places on your own schedule, at a fraction of the cost of group tours, check out WalknTours.com! To those that read this far, thank you and we appreciate you 🫶🏻

WTF is this reporting. How do you come so close to the problem and gloss over it with a shrug?? So these parents are paying ~$3,300/mo per child and the daycare is paying their employees ~$3,300/mo. If they have 50 kids, they could have 20 fucking employees, a premium location, and still be pulling in egregious profits

A local after school program found my resume on indeed and wanted to interview me. I have a lot of specialized experience in special ed. Did the interview, got offered the job and they wanted to pay me $16 an hour. I said “no”. The person offering me the job acted insulted that I wouldn’t accept. I laughed and ended the call. Parents need to ask themselves why they are paying so much but very little of that goes to the people who actually care for their children.

Well, sounds like they are in Newton. $150,000 doesn’t work if you live there and have to send children to daycare. Unfortunately. It’s where I grew up and I can’t afford to move back 😢

Shocked that Boston doesn’t have some kind of universal prek program. NYC already has universal 3k and prek and expanding 2K. Sure if you need to wrap around care you still need to pay additional but at least it covers large chunk of the day.
