@versobooks: What comes after the AI bubble bursts? The Reverse Centaur’s Guide to Life After AI by Cory Doctorow is out now. #nonfiction #corydoctorow
Yay! We'll be left with data centres that drain our energy grids and water supply and can't compete with the newest chips. Woo-fucking-hoo

To be anti-AI is to be fully aware of the worst excesses of the elites over the past three millennia. It’s a predictive mechanism which we are all imbued by nature to have and to be able to make without needing any terabytes of data. We know what we know about the rich and the powerful . They become rich and powerful and acquire an almost inevitable desire to enslave anyone who is not them. that is what “anti-AI means in this day and age, it’s not about being anti-statistical inference or a particular mathematical operation (what a straw man, and one which the capitalists will smile as it is uttered, so Doctorow risks nothing of his class status by saying so). It’s knowing that if allowed the plutocrats will wield any cudgel the scientists and engineers hand them (mathematical or otherwise, such as the nuke which is now cradled lovingly in the tiny hands of a madman in the White House ) a cudgel they will wield against anyone they seek an advantage over) even to the point of mass human fatalities . See: DJT blithely declaring “a civilization will end tonight” and sam Altman blithely prognosticating that AI could end all life on earth). and they will wield it mercilessly upon those of us who either don’t have the cudgel or have no desire to wield it against our fellow man.

Perfect take, no notes. Being hugely pro- or anti-AI is moronic. It’s a tool, like any other. How we use it is what matters.

Sure, but look where we began and where we are now. AI, or rather LLMs (they were never AI), has gone from "they will solve everything with their god-like power and make everyone rich" to "some of this stuff is probably going to be useful at some point," and yes, I bet it is going to be.
But it won't be like the dotcom bubble because LLMs, while useful, are not Internet level useful. They would only be useful in that way if they were real AI, and they're not, nor can they ever be.

You're forgetting one big thing. Those datacenters are outdated in 4 years. Your fiber optic is still functional. That's the issue. This bubble will also leave behind some useless R&D. This is one those bubbles that leave almost nothing behind.

The Apple of AI has not entered the market, which is to say, no one has figured out how to make AI something that consumers want.

If crypto goes away, we will be left with blockchain which is revolutionary tech. That crypto statement lowers your credibility a bit

the Dot Com bubble of the late 90s saw Pets.com implode but left us with the seed corn for Dot Com 2.0 that produced real companies like...LinkedIn. OK, this didn't go how i thought it would...

it just dawned on me... what about power plants? will we have more powerplants and this power capacity? what could we do with more power available?

ai companies will still exist? ai is an insanely useful tool if you actually do real work. especially chinese companies like deepseek who are closer to being profitable and have a sustainable business model.

Honestly I think we should get rid of a lot of those data centers when the he bubble pops. We don’t need them. We need the water and resources back

This is silly. AI is a rapidly changing technology. Those data centers are going to. e worthless the moment a new chipset is released and those weights are going to be obsolete just as fast. unbelievable cope this bubble is leaving nothing behind.
