@letsbetechs: Every time I see this line crossing the peak of the roof, I wonder about it, but I’ve never actually sought out the answer. Is there a minimum pipe length required after an elbow, or is that extra length just there to allow a little more flex on a pipe of this size? Or maybe it comes down to welded versus threaded? The extra flex since it's welded seems to make the most sense to me, but who can tell us exactly why? I look forward to seeing your thoughts and input in the comments! #hvac #hvactechnician #hvaclife
It's so that the pipe can contract and expande. The temperature differences can be up to 60° (in my region). On a 328ft(100m) pipe this can sum up to 2,83inch (72mm) in expansion. With this u it just bends a little, without it it would break.

expansion loop, steel pipe expands .00804"/per delta T/per 100' so you need to accommodate this with loops, bends, offsets or mechanical expansion joints.

Expansion loops have to be a certain size dependent on the pipe diameter. Think 2” is 6’

The pipe will expand depending on the temperature and pressure. especially over long straight runs.
