It's so that the pipe can contract and expande. The temperature differences can be up to 60° (in my region). On a 328ft(100m) pipe this can sum up to 2,83inch (72mm) in expansion. With this u it just bends a little, without it it would break.

The pipe will expand depending on the temperature and pressure. especially over long straight runs.
