Watching him experience firsthand what it’s like to hold one of your pets as they pass away and be there for their very last breath broke my heart. But I tried to make it into a learning moment. When we choose to care for these little ones, we’re responsible for them. We have to make sure they have enough food and water and we’re paying attention when we let them out, that everyone makes it safely in and out of the coop, and that we’re constantly checking to make sure no one has gotten caught or hurt. Unfortunately, today we let all of our baby turkeys out while we were tending to everyone. We walked toward the front of the house for a little while, and when we came back, he found that one of the babies had gotten caught on the coop door. He said, “I think he’s dying.” but he still tried giving him water and food, hoping it would help. When he noticed the baby turkey’s eyes starting to look “sleepy,” he asked me if he could just hold him until he fell asleep. I went inside and when I walked back out, I see him with the realization that our little turkey was giving up. He stayed right with him, holding and comforting him until he took his last breath. As heartbreaking as it was to watch Liam go through that, I hope he carries this lesson with him: loving our animals isn’t only about the fun moments. It’s also about responsibility, paying attention, caring for them, and sometimes being there to comfort them when there’s nothing you can do. #homestead #turkeys #pets
