“Why does my partner with dementia think I’m cheating on them?” This painful, confusing experience has a name: Othello syndrome, also known as delusional jealousy or infidelity delusions. It’s most common in Lewy body dementia, where visual hallucinations are also frequent — and the two can overlap in very real and distressing ways. It’s a neurological symptom of a changing brain. And while it can feel isolating, it’s not uncommon and you are not alone. There are treatment options, and naming what’s happening can sometimes help the person feel less afraid or ashamed. I’ve linked two research articles below if you want to dig deeper. Research Articles: Hashimoto, M., Ikeda, M., & Sakamoto, S. (2015). Clinical features of delusional jealousy in elderly patients with dementia. The Journal of Clinical Psychiatry, 76(6), 2769. https://doi.org/10.4088/JCP.14m09018 Park, J. H., Sarwar, S., Hassett, L. C., Staab, J. P., & Fipps, D. C. (2024). Clinical characterization, course, and treatment of Othello syndrome: A case series and systematic review of the literature. Journal of the Academy of Consultation-Liaison Psychiatry, 65(1), 89–105. https://doi.org/10.1016/j.jaclp.2023.09.006 #DementiaAwareness #LewyBodyDementia #OthelloSyndrome #CarePartnerSupport #DelusionsInDementia #DementiaEducation #AlzheimersAndBrainAwarenessMonth #YouAreNotAlone #MemoryLossSupport
