girl you’d love this. one time a lady gave birth to a son & it only had 10% of the husband’s dna. it turns out the dad, before his own birth, had been in the womb with a twin, who he ended up absorbing in utero. because he had his twin’s reproductive cells, the child had actually been fathered by his unborn twin. sounds crazy but there’s an article if ur interested lol

UPDATE EVERYONE! I have reached out to the leading researcher in the feild (turns out we are not the only people curious about fetal microchimerism and stem cell transplants!!) hopefully I will have more info soon

Did they accidentally discover that a bone marrow transplant can help treat infertility? 🤔

I donated anonymously bone marrow to an 8yo lil girl with leukemia on July 9 2020. I conceived my daughter on July 16 2020. The primary drug that they prescribe to bone marrow donors that I injected for 2 weeks prior to donating has 1 major side effect. It puts you in such a high state of fertility that you can release an egg every 8-12hours. For WEEKS you can stay that fertile…yea..read the fine print if you are selected

Forensic DNA scientist here!! It is very rare but every once in a while we get a known buccal sample from a suspect or victim and it has mixed DNA (not normal). If we go back in that persons records more than likely they would have had a bone marrow transplant done in the past. That being said, I could only assume some of that DNA could transfer to the baby leading the child to have a triallele (3 loci at 1 location) at some locations on the helix. Very interesting thought!

this is why critical thinking matters this is how discoveries are made! These are great points, I wonder what the child’s dna structure would be like and why did mom have a bone marrow transplant

oo pick me!! I was so happy for her. bone marrow makes all the cells in your blood (white blood cells, reds and platelets), not the baby making cells. so while yes she will have donor DNA in her bone marrow, the baby is definitely hers 🥰

Hey I've been summoned!!! Clinical researcher here. Technically with allogeneic bone marrow transplants mom would have new blood and immune cells from the donor.. but the rest of her genetic material is the same. Sooo while blood transfers over to the fetus through the placenta, and there's a very very small chance baby could inherit from marrow donor cells (they call it 'microchimerism').. the fetal genome itself wouldn't be changed overall, and it wouldn't contribute genetic inheritance to the baby whatsoever. At least not in the way you're thinking of chimerism

DNA and pregnancy is already crazy. My hair is not as curly bc I took on the dna of my husband when I was pregnant and sometimes the baby can send cells to help mom like it’s crazy girl

It's probably more likely previously her immune system was attacking any embryos almost immediately after fertilisation, but then after the BMT she would be on immunosuppressants to stop her rejecting the bone marrow, so the immunosuppression may have been what allowed her to become pregnant.
