Totally agree. My daughter live with us until she was 24. She paid all her own bills: phone, car insurance, food, medical and chip in on electricity. It didn’t cost us a dime to let her stay at home, but it also taught her responsibility to fund her own life. By the way, this was her idea, great kid.

I agree because I think what no one wants to talk about is the fact that parents have probably not factored in because who can know what life is going to bring you taking on extra expense even if it is your child. It’s still an adult child who should be contributing that’s the common outcome. I love that my mom at 84 is still alive and I suppose I could go home and live with her if the wheels came off my life wagon and I could’ve done that over the 40 years of my adult life, but I don’t want to do that to her. It’s nice that she’s there but we have this feeling anymore that kids want to depend on their parents and burden them financially I never wanted to but the difference is my mom is there I just don’t want to take up her resources because she also has to retire. She also has to be considerate of her future that is uncertain and unless I’m willing to be the sole caregiver, they have to be very cautious about spending all their money, taking care of a capable, but unwilling stubborn child.

I will have her contribute, but it will go into a savings account for a down payment or 1st/Last Deposit. I don’t need her $ as much as she will need the savings later. It’s good habit building.

My kids paid for their phones, cable and the internet. They often offered to pay for groceries too.
