Refugee status was meant for temporary protection while there’s war/persecution. Once it’s safe, you go home or apply through normal immigration channels. DRC, Somalia, Burundi, Ethiopia- Their own presidents/ministers have publicly said "it’s stable, come home". The UNHCR even has "voluntary return" programs for some. But people don’t go because SA has better grants, schools, clinics, and informal economy opportunities. So they renew refugee papers every 2 years instead. It becomes a permanent residence loophole.That’s not asylum anymore. That’s economic migration wearing a refugee mask. SA must close the loophole and enforce immigration and business law.
