Arkan Plaza, First Al Sheikh Zayed, Giza, Egypt Yesterday, I was harassed by a man who worked there. He made unwanted advances toward me, tried to touch me, and I rejected him. After that, I was allowed to stay and work. Today, I returned to continue working on Somali Secrets. I was already live on my business account, minding my own business, when another man began trying to get my attention. I continued focusing on my livestream. Then, all of a sudden, I was told I had to leave, but no one would explain why. Security approached me, I felt harassed, and a man grabbed my phone while I was recording. I was never given any explanation for why I was being removed. This is not the first time I have experienced racism, misogyny, or sexism during my time here. In my own experience, I have repeatedly faced unwanted advances from Arab men, and there have been times when saying "no" has not felt safe because of how some men reacted afterward. What makes this especially ironic is that I'm here to study and teach ancient African history through Somali Secrets. I came here to learn, document history, and share culture—not to fear for my safety. Going live was never supposed to become about this. I had planned to talk about Somali Secrets and the work I'm building. Instead, I found myself documenting a situation that made me fear for my safety. I stayed live because it was the only way I felt safe, and I wanted there to be a public record of what was happening in case anything happened to me. No woman should have to worry that rejecting unwanted advances could put her safety at risk. Every woman deserves to be treated with dignity, respect, and safety. I am asking that this incident be taken seriously and investigated. Everyone deserves to be able to work, create, and exist in public without fear of harassment or intimidation. #egpyt #racism
