The Malvinas are Argentine because Argentina inherited Spain’s sovereignty over the islands after independence in 1816, exercised administration there, and in 1833 the United Kingdom expelled the Argentine authorities and established control by force. Since then, Argentina has consistently protested the occupation. The United Nations recognizes the existence of a sovereignty dispute and has repeatedly called on both countries to negotiate a peaceful solution.
