@professionaltraveler: 7 things to know before planning a safari + 4 bonus tips (and what camera to bring): 👇🏼 1️⃣ Don’t Obsess Over the “Big 5.” They’re iconic, but safari is so much more. The bush is home to giraffes, hippos, wild dogs, zebras, antelopes, and thousands of other animals. Don’t miss the magic. 2️⃣ Birds will surprise you. You may go for the lions, but leave obsessed with the lilac breasted rollers, southern carmine bee eaters and fish eagles. 3️⃣ Pack light, and skip the hard-shell luggage. Bush planes require soft-sided bags, and most safari camps include complimentary same-day laundry. 4️⃣ Your iphone camera won’t cut it. If you want good photos, you’ll need a professional camera with long lens. The good news is that you can often rent cameras and long lenses from luxury safari lodges or rent them before leaving home. My go-to is a 200-600mm zoom lens. If you’re going on a safari this year, save this.
