If you tag a runner you have to do it with the ball in glove or hand. This is a force out, possession of the ball and tagging the base with any foot or hand is an out.

Umpire here. First baseman has to do the hokey pokey before touching the base with his head. Runner is safe.

Official Baseball Rule 5.09(b)(6) (and NFHS Rule 8-2-1 / NCAA Rule 8-6), a fielder can record a force out by touching the base with "any part of the player's person" while holding the ball.
