This has nothing to do with Islam itself. The problem is that some people have used Islam as an excuse to justify their own harmful actions and desires. Islam does not teach oppression or injustice. While Islam historically recognized young marriages under certain circumstances, it also placed conditions, responsibilities, and principles that must be upheld. The reality is that marriage and society in the past were very different from today. People lived in different environments, had different responsibilities, and matured under different social conditions. A 9-year-old living centuries ago did not experience the same upbringing, expectations, or circumstances as a 9-year-old today. However, in today’s world, I wholeheartedly disagree with allowing young marriage. We now have a much greater understanding of child development, education, and the importance of ensuring someone is emotionally, mentally, and physically ready before taking on such responsibilities. Judging history without understanding its context can lead to misunderstandings, but we also have to recognize the realities and responsibilities of our current time. Sometimes people defend certain practices because of cultural or national identity rather than looking at the issue objectively and separating those traditions from what Islam actually teaches.
