whatever the reason why he was assassinated, i’ll never, and i mean, NEVER believe that marika had a part to play in his death until fromsoft themselves comes out and says themselves “oh yeah marika did that shit”. the game makes it so clear that marika was devastated over his death.

i think miquella initially chose godwyn as his “consort” and might of had a hand in the night if the black knives. and ranni obviously is still doing what she’s trying to achieve with the event. it’s a very interesting theory.

I think he knew something about his fate too, just not the full picture.. like he may have been led to believe his destiny was going to serve some greater purpose, but ended up being misled about what was actually going to happen. I also think Marika had some level of involvement in his assassination. Setting things in motion. Considering how much she planned and manipulated to change the order, it's hard for me to believe the night of the black knives happened completely without her knowing.

think some details point towards the idea of some sort of plan involving godwyn like ever notice how no one is upset that godwyn is dead but the manner of his death and the black knives are hunting down ranni even tho she plays an important role in plot to kill godwyn. seems like there was a plan involving godwyns death and resurrection and ranni for whatever reason spilt the curse mark which did not allow godwyn to have a full death like radahn and to be resurrected afterward.

Currently, I find interesting the theory that perhaps Godwyn was promised to Ranni as a way to definitively consolidate the alliance between the Golden Order and the Carian Royal Family, since, as she was seen as a potential successor to Marika to become the goddess of a new era, she would need an Elden Lord, and who better than the very personification of the current Order?
