a dog that has been beaten will remeber he/she has been beaten until the day he/she dies. animals, especially mammals, suffer, are aware of the suffering, remember the suffering and will avoid the suffering when possible. the thing most animals can't do is make sense of the suffering, that's why it's actually worse for them.

I feel like it’s also an attempt to further separate us from nature and further separate us from fulfillment in this life/on this earth. We’re also animals!

Got my dog from a shelter. Every time my husband took his ball cap off when he home from work my dog tucked tail, cowered and hid by me for years. We’ve never hit or abused him. We had rescues before and never seen one be scared and hide from just taking a hat off. He remembered being hurt, and he knew how bad it could hurt. I’ve always hated their thoughts on animals.

Even if they don’t perceive suffering, wouldn’t god know they are suffering?

No one can own a rescue pet and believe they don’t know and understand suffering. The more science uncovers about the communication, reasoning and emotional systems of other living creatures, the more humbled we will become.

I think animals might actually suffer more than us because they can’t intellectualize why something is happening.

The "they don't experience pain like us"argument has been used for the severely mentally disabled, babies, different races, mutes & anyone else who can't speak/aren't allowed 2 speak for themselves😡

I don't know for a fact, I just know it's true that he'd use that same argument for black people 🤷🏻♂️

Doesn‘t it make the suffering even worse? Animals are at the cognitive level of newborns. Like when we are in pain we can tolerate it because we know the pain will usually go away after a time. Animals and newborns can’t do that.

pain is not the same as suffering, that is what craig was arguing. humans are able to feel their suffering and reflect on it, they'll dwell on pains, but animals dont, for animals this is daily life, its natural to them. animals do not have the intrinsic worth and consciousness that humans have.

Is William Craig OK with it if someone just performed animal cruelty in front of his eyes?

That’s a weird way to say animals don’t have a sense of self…something we know isn’t true.

A world where animals don't suffer and experience no pain at all, and only humans got diseases and were affected by natural disasters while every single animal gets miraculously spared, would raise an eyebrow on every human and immediately conclude that there is a magician behind the curtain, which wouldn't negate free will, but would be an overwhelming pressure to the degree of almost compulsion of following God. And God doesn't want that.
As for the suffering before humans existed, no one knows. Maybe they indeed didn't suffer. We have no way of knowing. Or maybe the world was created old, or God permitted animal suffering so we can appreciate creation and all that preceded us. Animal suffering isn't a problem for any believer to lose his/her sleep over it and it's in no way shape or form a paradox or a contradiction with the idea of a benevolent God

It is maybe true though, a Hungarian philosopher Agnes Heller actually wrote a pretty sound argument that animals don't suffer, because they can't reflect. She was an atheist, so this idea may be true

Monotheism is fairly new in our history. While it consolidated the gods and simplified the divine order, it faced an unresolvable challenge: the problem of evil and suffering. If a singular god was responsible for whole of creation, then he’s also responsible for suffering, much of which just so harrowing and unthinkable. Maybe the Catharists had the better answer.

It’s this dominion thinking that rationalizes away their treatment of other races and ethnic groups as well.
