I've been learning Chinese for a few years now and now that I'm somewhat advanced in writing characters I use dotted notebooks, especially dotted for writing Chinese (so I guess it works for Japanese too), where every other dot is a bit bigger. that's so practical when you want to write all your Chinese/German (in my case) notes on the same page.
