They form when ancient salt deposits dissolve into seawater, creating water so salty and dense it can’t mix with the ocean around it. The brine sinks and settles into seafloor depressions, creating shorelines, waves, and even “rivers” underwater. The density difference is so extreme that submarines can float on the surface of a brine pool just like a boat floats on the ocean. For most marine life, the salt level is toxic. Cross the shoreline and you won’t survive. But extremophile microbes thrive there, creating bizarre ecosystems in complete darkness. It’s a lake within an ocean.
