@thriive.hc: if you're immunocompromised obviously there's a little more reason to be concerned but if you're a fully grown and otherwise healthy adult, maybe just work on your critical thinking before you throw food out for no reason xx #coffee #foodsafety #expired #milk #criticalthinking
You have to remember. These people can’t go into the future and find out what exact day that jug goes bad. Best before dates are often determined by the producer (in this case not the farmers but the milk brand) with the transit time + how the store might handle it in mind

Milk is one thing that always follow the date on. For some reason it always smells “off” to me, so I can’t trust my nose.

I’m a microbiologist and I used to work in a food micro research lab and one of the ways we would evaluate spoilage was the sniff test, it’s a legitimate and valid way to check if something’s off.

I would love to be like this because I hate wasting food… but there’s so much anxiety around this for me like what if I make myself or someone sick

My rule of thumb is sniff test + visual. No lumps, doesn't smell off and doesn't taste sour? Yeah nah that milk is still good.
Also best by and use by dates are averages that tend to air on the side of too soon for liability reasons. Genuinely if you know what to look for you can use them as guidelines instead of hard rules.

I find that milk in particular has a longer expiry date than labelled. Which is so handy as my local Cole’s doesn’t have stock of these with more than 4 days expiry

Sniff test always. I have no issues eating yoghurt or drinking milk thats beyond the use by date as long as its not mouldy or chunky with a smell...

You can 10000% smell/ taste when milk is off- date is redundant when you want a coffee 😂

I wonder if the protein milk lasts longer or something to do with the extra processing? Cause I’ve never had regular milk last that long 👀
