You expressed my frustration so well. I’m a Japanese American who lived there and worked there and studied there and it makes me so annoyed when they act like Japan, as a country, exists for their consumption. Also, the number of people complaining about Shibuya crossing being overrated or underwhelming drives me nuts. It’s a crossing. Tokyo never claimed it was there to entertain you. People then venting their dismay over a crossing is so annoying.

Thank you well said 👏👏👏 I’m always happy when people visit Japan, have a great time, and go home with good memories. What surprises me is how many people treat Japan like it’s some perfect fantasy world. I was born and raised here, and I’ve lived abroad too. Japan has plenty of problems, just like every other country. Visiting and actually living here are completely different experiences. A country isn’t a movie review. If you want to know what it’s really like, look at how people and animals are treated, working conditions, equality, and how serious issues are handled. Japan has low gun violence, which does make it feel safer in some ways. But that doesn’t mean it’s safe in every way, especially for women. Ask foreign women who’ve actually lived here. Enjoy Japan, but don’t put it on a pedestal. It’s not paradise. It’s just another country with good and bad sides

Yessss. Been living in Japan for the past 3 years. It’s like babe you bought the same onitsuka tigers as everyone else and waited 3 hours in line to eat at a place you saw in line when there’s probably a hundred small places nearby with a better experience
