when I was a kid I only did those things for the approval of adults, now I dont have that and I had to kind of learn myself how to actually care for myself for me and not for the sake of others, I feel like there is some middle ground actually make sure your kids know why their doing things "because I say so" isnt really enough because you wont be there forever to tell them to do things

My older sister loves to say "in life you're going to have to do things you don't enjoy like paying taxes or doing chores. It's important you do them anyways because they they are a basic life skill." and I agree completely. If you want to be a functioning adult you can't be a crybaby. You need manners and discipline.

My grandkids mother didn’t teach them table manners. My son now has custody of the 5 kids, ages 9 and under. We have been working with them over the last year and they are finally in the habit of minding their manners

You have to explain why they have to do it, how it benefits them, and how it aligns with their values. You cant just tell them “you have to do this because i say so!” That’s extremely lazy and a terrible strategy.
