@theaviationtherapist: Every pilot in the air today got there because of someone on the ground nobody ever thinks about. I’m a psychologist who specializes in aviation. I want to talk about ground crew. Ramp agents. Fuelers. Gate agents. Baggage handlers. The people who marshal, deice, and turn every aircraft. Because the psychological experience of working ground operations is something the aviation mental health conversation almost never touches. It should. What ground crew actually carry: Jet noise exposure at close range over years which research shows produces the same hypervigilance and threat-response conditioning as other high-decibel, high-danger environments. Turnaround pressure where every minute counts and consequences move upstream to people who never see your face. Safety responsibility without authority. Knowing what you do has direct consequences for everyone on that aircraft, while having almost no control over the conditions you’re working in. And the particular invisibility of a job that is essential and structurally ignored. That combination has a specific psychological cost. And it deserves to be named.
