He makes a good point about optimism and progression, but kicking it off by saying "America was the most racist country in the history of the world" is a bad way to start. It just wasn't. Read history. Just say "America could be a very racist nation", which is true [though that is something that has been happening with every nation, or kingdom, or tribe, forever, even within the same broad ethnic groups]. And yet we have reconciled with that racism more comprehensively than any other place. Name one country who has done more to directly confront the issue.

Determining the "most racist country in history" is impossible because racism is subjective, exists on a spectrum, and has manifested in various devastating ways across different cultures.
