The real reason Neil sleeps pressed against this brown fence will break your heart. 🦭💔 Southern elephant seals are incredibly social. In the subantarctic, they live packed tightly together in massive colonies. They constantly lean, nudge, and pile on top of each other for warmth, security, and comfort. But Neil was born right here in Tasmania, thousands of kilometres away from his species' normal home. Because elephant seals always return to their birthplaces, Neil lives a completely solitary life. He has likely never met another southern elephant seal.Without a colony to huddle with, Neil’s natural instincts still drive him to seek out that physical contact. When he presses his heavy body against this fence, he isn't just resting. He is satisfying a deep, biological need for comfort and connection. That fence is the only substitute he has for the family he never knew. 🥺❤️

So elephant seals return to where they were born. So where is his mother & rest of the pod that landed on the beaches of Tasmania? Seals are very social & live together in large numbers. Can someone explain why he’s alone? And why Tasmania? I mean don’t they like it colder?
