A mastectomy is the surgical removal of one or both breasts because cancer is there, or because the risk of developing it is so high that removing healthy breast tissue becomes the best chance at survival. For survivors, previvors, and those living with metastatic breast cancer, a mastectomy is never a simple decision. It’s a life-altering surgery that changes your body, your identity, and often requires years of reconstruction, revisions, complications, and healing. And despite having insurance, many women in the United States spend well over $100,000 over the course of their breast cancer treatment and reconstruction. No one chooses this journey. The next time you hear someone dismiss reconstruction as “elective” or call it a cosmetic procedure, remember what it really is: rebuilding after an amputation.
