@cbseveningnews: The FDA has approved a new daily cholesterol pill that works differently than statins and could offer another treatment option for some patients. Tony Dokoupil spoke with a Columbia University cardiologist. #cholesterol #FDA #health #healthtok
She didn’t explain the the pharmacology of the 2nd drug. They should’ve just interviewed a pharmacist

Pharmacist here! Lipfendra binds to the same receptors as those injections, which are monoclonal antibodies. This is a macrocyclic peptide, a big chain of amino acids that loop together. PCSK9 binds to LDL (bad cholesterol) receptors, which prevents it from being cleared from your blood. By inhibiting PCSK9, we can give more openings for LDL to bind and clear from the blood. And now, it’s oral! Pretty cool (but expensive).

PCSK9 inhibitors have been out for years! It’s just a breakthrough because this formulation can be taken as a pill :)

lol at everyone nervous about this mechanism of action like Repatha and Praluent haven’t been out for 10+ years. It’s just the oral version of an established injection. Same as the GLP1s transitioning to oral administration..

Already not accurate source, have a PharmD not a MD explain this, doctors of PHARMACY. Shows this news station uses false information and lies to boost an agenda. Lies!!!!!

FYI - if you want to take this new medication and you want your insurance to pay for it, I can assure you that the vast majority of medication plans will not cover it unless you have tried and failed other cheaper, older meds for cholesterol. And if you have to pay cash out-of-pocket, it’s going to cost you hundreds if not thousands of dollars

We already have PCSK-9 inhibitors. This will cost patients hundreds of dollars a month, and make them questions statins all together. What’s truly the difference between this and a statin? It will only reduce adherence to medication.

And what makes this drug in pill form better than the pills that are still in the market? It’s a different mechanism to lower cholesterol, but what is the benefit of any?

Another “Daily use” to add to the cost!? It’s as if Farma created what works to get us to now pay per day instead of monthly… 😏🙄🤬
