Rakhee Parekh :
in Gujarati, the number 8 is aht (so?) and night is that same sound but with a R in the front instead of N. Apparently similar etymology … haven’t seen an explanation thought for why night and the number eight are so similar in these languages to begin with…

In Hebrew night is pronounced “Lila” and the number eight is “shmone”, maybe an exception to the rule lol

Hey, I can tell you why! So all of these language are related to each other—they all come from the same ancestor, which is called Proto-Indo-European. So that PIE language is the ancestor of all Romance languages (Spanish, Latin, etc) and also Germanic languages (English, German) and many others. In that language, the word for the number eight and the word for night happened to sound very similar. Then, over the course of thousands of years, the languages all changed how sounds are pronounced. And because the sounds in the beginning words for eight and night were similar, they were all impacted in the same way. Each language had slightly different sound changes, but they followed patterns that applied to both words because they started off in similar places, too. Hope that helps!
