@thebridgeprep: WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF OILY WATER SEPARATOR? ⚓🔧 This is one of the TOP 5 questions asked in Engine Orals and PSC Inspections. WHAT IS OWS? Oily Water Separator or OWS is shipboard equipment installed in the engine room. Its job is to treat oily bilge water before discharging it into the sea. PURPOSE: 1. SEPARATION: To separate oil from water in the bilge and other oily mixtures 2. COMPLIANCE: To ensure overboard discharge meets MARPOL Annex I requirement of less than 15ppm oil content 3. POLLUTION PREVENTION: To protect the marine environment from oil pollution 4. SAFETY FEATURE: It has a 15ppm alarm and automatic stopping device. If oil content exceeds 15ppm, discharge stops automatically IMPORTANT NOTES FOR ORALS: The OWS does NOT treat garbage or sewage. Only oily mixtures. The 15ppm monitoring system must be sealed and working. Illegal bypass = Criminal offense and vessel detention. Remember: "No OWS, No discharge. No 15ppm, No discharge." How confident are you explaining this in orals? Drop "OWS" in the comments if you got it 👇 #OilyWaterSeparator #MARPOLAnnexI #EngineOrals #PSCReady #TheBridgePrep
