Your brain goes to the worst place. "They're planning to let me go." "I messed something up." "They hate me." Stop. Nine times out of ten, your manager is not ghosting you. They're drowning. And you're just the one who hasn't made it to the top of their list yet. Here's how to handle it without spiralling or looking needy. Step one. Audit the last two weeks. Did you miss a deadline? Was there a project that went sideways? Any feedback you didn't act on? If yes, that might be why. Prepare to address it. If no, move on. Don't invent problems. Step two. Send a specific, short message. Don't send "hey, can we chat?" That puts the burden on them to figure out what you need. Instead, send this. "Hey [name] - I know you're slammed. Two quick things from me. One, [project] is tracking well, here's the headline. Two, I need a ten-minute decision from you on [specific thing] by Friday. Happy to DM or async, whichever is faster." You just did three things. You acknowledged their workload. You gave them a win to read. And you gave them one specific, easy-to-answer ask with a deadline. Ninety percent of managers will reply to a message like this. Because you made it easy for them. Step three. If they still don't reply by Friday, move the decision forward yourself. Send this. "I haven't heard back, so I'm going to proceed with [plan]. Happy to change course if you want to weigh in - just flag before end of day Monday." You didn't wait. You didn't escalate. You just made the decision visible and moved. Senior people do this all the time. It's not being aggressive. It's being functional. And here's the bonus - your manager will quietly appreciate it
