Tools don’t turn people into abusers. They either are or they aren’t. Take away an e-collar, from a known abuser, and they are still going to abuse their dog. Don’t need a tool for that. Not really understanding the argument.

I think this comes down to a teaching issue, and a responsibility issue. If you’re good at teaching clients effectively, they don’t make up their own ways to do something. This may also mean deciding when a client is ready to graduate to an ecollar or if they aren’t ready for that skill at all. All of my clients must learn foundations first so I know they have the timing down, and we make sure I can teach them clearly and they can take directions well. Also, just because some people out there will abuse any tool doesn’t mean I assume my clients as a whole aren’t smart enough to learn the skill well. If we’re going on the argument that we shouldn’t endorse the use of something just because there’s a chance someone misuses it and it could he dangerous, then we also shouldn’t use planes, cars, or knives.

The temptation to escalate a stimulus (ANY stimulus) when you don’t get a response, rather than step back and adjust something, is so powerful. It really takes a lot of cognitive effort and skills to override and take a different path.

I don’t get people who use very low levels of the e collar in place of a clicker or a marker word, I occasionally use e collars when i travel and I just don’t see a point in all of that effort to get an e collar when it could be replaced with a simple “yes”

I’m not against ecollars. I’ve used them (don’t currently as I don’t have dogs who need them) and I am very aware that there are many people who use them correctly and ethically. But to me that doesn’t excuse the overuse of the tool. I hate seeing people bend over backwards to defend this tool because they personally use the tool correctly. What about the good majority of people that don’t? Thats the issue here. That’s what I feel you are trying to point out that people are missing and continuing to defend a tool that can so easily cause extreme harm to a dog. People say their dog works at a level 6-10. Why does the collar go up to 100? How many people are cranking up the level unnecessarily and causing extreme pain to a dog? The whole point is that these tools are SO easy to misuse. It doesn’t matter if you personally use them correctly. The point is that it’s a tool that’s so wildly misused and so easily accessed by uneducated people that leads others to become concerned about the tool as a whole. Why are we giving tools like this to the general public that can so easily use it to harm a dog? I could care less who uses them correctly. That doesn’t excuse any of the other bs that people do with ecollars.

personally i see the ecolar has a doggy pager. using it with positive reinforcement with a small sound like in situations where the dog is slightly too far to hear the handlers voice. never for corrections would i use it for it seems unfair on the dog. but i never touched an ecolar so im just imagining what i would do if i was.

I've always been confused by people saying "my dog works on a 6. I can't even feel it, so it must not hurt." that's just proof your dog is more sensitive and perceives stimulation differently than we do. you don't know what does or doesn't hurt.

100% I actually only use it for containment system. I would have loved to have the tactile version (he no longer crosses the barrier). And I used the indoor e collar on vibrate only when he chased the cats. (No longer use it) and the containment system outdoors sometimes I just use his regular collar and he doesn’t question it. I wished there was a different way. I believe E collars have their place but they are high potential for abuse. I also believe that they should be regulated on how powerful they can get. It’s crazy to be able to jack something up to 100. :(

Personally, I think that repeatedly having to stim a dog on “low levels” all the time is often ineffective ecollar training (though I agree with low level conditioning), and similar to the clicker analogy, it can increase confusion and cause people to become extremely reliant on it or never be able to move away from it at all. Any time I see someone who holds the remote in their hand 24/7 when working dogs makes me question if this is the case. I want my ecollar to be my emergency brake only (again, after conditioning over well known commands), and once the dog knows what the stim is, and how to turn it off, I want access to higher levels for emergency circumstances. I want it to be brief, well timed, and understood so I don’t have to hit the button again for months to years on end. The goal with ecollar training is to eventually never need the remote in hand at all and I don’t think that same emergency back up is tied in to the apple watch type “tap”. Just my honest thoughts, tho may be controversial.

I am in a similar boat to the commenter here (I am a dog trainer). Personally I don’t give the ecollar to anyone who I believe would abuse the tool at all. I will flat out not work with them. but to answer your question… yes I would absolutely use a device that only went up to a 10 (assuming the 10 isn’t strengthened to compensate for the less levels because there ARE ones on the market like that). However I will say this - me personally, I live in rural Vermont. My dogs are off leash all of the time and i’m training dogs in similar situations. If for *some* reason my dog didn’t recall and they were in a life threatening situation like.. chasing a bear or moose which we see often. I would absolutely go higher because the high stim isn’t life threatening. So if the ecollar didn’t go too high… i would probably need to fence in my yard and keep them on flexis in the woods as that “emergency” fail safe. now… if they DID chase something like a bear (which it never has happened) i would take it as a HUGE sign that we need to work on training more - impulse control, emotion regulation, listening in drive. and none of that involves the ecollar. i hope this makes sense. i actually really appreciate your genuine questions and i wish more people in the training industry were open to respectful convos around the realities of tool use.

I could just as easily take my dogs leash and strangle them. But I wouldn’t because I’m not an abuser. If somebody wants to abuse dogs they will, regardless of the tool.

I remember before ecollars were banned the people in my life, regular average dog owners, getting frustrated, impatient, angry at their dogs when the recall didn't work and amping up the power higher and higher every time. And no, I don't think it matters if they were taught by "the right trainer" at all, the tool itself encourages and rewards escalating punishment because of how highly reinforcing it is for the person using it.

the thing i theoretically prefer is the 1-100 scale is that the space between levels is very small to allow for more nuance of correction. if you scale down the levels you leave much larger leaps between the levels.

I started balanced with a working breed. we saw great success with a "low level"/positively conditioned stim. however, over time, it crept up. and there was fallout. and then i got education, a mentor and a clicker. we are more happy than ever, we are making better choices in situations where i was commanding and reinforcing the commands with the ecollar. now we do "tone" only. I'll never choose to condition a dog to a stim again. though the wean-off from the tool took ME a lot of time. moving to R+ was a total mindset shift. I know the tool community thinks we're cracked in the head and can't handle "high drive dogs" but what they are missing is that we're artists and our very ethics are completely different.

i use an ecollar on my dog when i walk him on my property that is 20 acres. to train him on the stim, i used the first setting (your dog already needs to know what the word “come” means, as they need to relate the stim to “come”. if you’re dog doesnt know what “come” means, it wont know to go to you to “turn off” the stim). i tried it on myself (on the highest setting) and its comparable to when someone touches you and you get shocked. my collar goes from 1-7. i use an ecollar because i live in northern ontario and there is a possibility we will come across dangerous wildlife. i have brought my dog to the dump and desensitized him to bears, then used horses to attempt to desensitize him to moose (as we do not frequently come across moose). i thought the horse would work, but the one time he saw a massive bull, he charged. i called him back and he didnt come, so i used the stim on the highest setting (im confident a vibration would not have worked. he knows what come means and he knows he’s always supposed to come back (this was the first time he’s ever ignored his recall, and i did not use an ecollar to train recall, i used a long line) he came back to me because the collar probably hurt, and he wanted the stim to stop). he didnt yelp, but he did shake, so i knew it was uncomfortable or hurt him a little. even though i could tell it wasnt comfortable, im glad he was wearing his ecollar. id rather him receive the stim than have his head stomped on by a moose. with that being said, i think there are many people who use ecollars who do not first establish basic commands. if you tell your dog to come, and they dont know what the word “come” means, an ecollar is not going to help them. an ecollar should only be used to polish training, never as the first resort.

My biggest issue with e-collars is their propensity to malfunction. I have literally seen an e-collar burn holes into a dogs neck when it malfunctioned. A tool with the ability to cause that much harm even when "used properly" does not belong on an animal.

Yes thank you. Any tool requires the owner to be trained to the tool. Education is huge and I’m thankful you’re doing that to advocate for the dogs. I don’t have the platform or all of the knowledge to share but I board pets in my home and we are positive reinforcement only. Any prong, shock, choke collars are required to be removed and taken with the owner. We’ve never had to use them even on the dogs who are “trained” with them.

personally I think the limit should be 15 or 20, but at the same incremental levels that an educator or dogtra has at those levels, and a adjustable vibrate function, alot of low quality e-collars have only 3 or 5 levels with the max level being the equivalent to a 50 to 100 on a educator or dogtra, and the stim being painful even on low levels. It is a really big issue that e-collars are so easily abused and I honestly believe that they should have restricted access because of that, but I would love a version that has restricted levels for the public to be able to use without risk of abuse, and more readily available instructions and courses on how to correctly condition and train with an e-collar.

We had a dog come into our office with a severe phobia of going outside (I work at a VB clinic). Did some digging and it turned out this phobia started when his electric fence collar malfunctioned. The collar’s use history recorded over 200 shocks in one hour. All tech can fail… what is the fallout risk if it does 😔

Lots of the comments are hitting the nail on the head already with the point of dog abusers will find a way regardless of a tool. People also have to remember not to humanize dogs because they experience forms of communication differently than we do. I use a mini educator and I completely took the vibrate function off bc of how aversive it can be to dogs. My dogs working stim level is also higher than most people are commenting. On a mini educator I don’t get any sign he feels it until I reach around a 13 in an empty room so I would not use one that only goes to 10. Depending on the environment, that working number can more than double. And compared to some dogs, my dog’s working level is low. At this point in his training it is mainly a safety precaution I take because as reliable as his recall and training is, I love the extra peace of mind I have with the mini educator knowing that my dog is accustomed to the stim and he knows exactly what I’m communicating to him at the tap of a button. I don’t disagree with your point about regulation in dog training and tool usage at all, trust me, but the fact you are seemingly against e collars and villainize them online, but are asking questions like this on tiktok bc you’re unfamiliar with how these tools work when used correctly at the same time is also harmful to new dog owners in the market for dog training. My boyfriend is a balanced trainer and rehabs so many aggression cases that were previously trained force free so he can say the same exact thing about ff methods.

As for the 0-100 thing, I think the purpose of that is versatility. I’d absolutely be willing to use a 0-20 collar on my dog instead. But there are a few uses for those higher levels, such as rattle snake training. Some dogs also start on higher levels and wean down as they learn to understand the stimulus and recognize it at lower levels. (For example they may begin training at 25 and taper down to 10) A lot of people advocate for ecollars by saying any tool can hurt a dog. And that is true. Even a leash and collar can harm or even kill a dog. But I do recognize how easy it is to cause serious physical discomfort and even pain with an ecollar that goes that high and I don’t see any reason not to implement some form of evaluation before a person is able to obtain an ecollar of any sort, especially a 0-100 collar.

OH I totally misunderstood that question when I answered it a minute ago and I’m so late lol. But yeah. I’d definitely be open to trying a different form of stimulus depending on the purpose and use. I often use an ecollar when my dog is in the water as she can’t hear me surrounded by geese and waves. I use the ecollar to get her attention and she will look to me for hand signals. It’s actually saved her from a snapping turtle she didn’t see 😅 if there were a less aversive tool that did the same thing, I’d absolutely use it. For recall and off leash work, especially at a distance, I’d probably stick to something mildly aversive such as a low stim.

If it cut out at a lower number and did not include the upper numbers? Assuming it still has the same very small level increases, I absolutely would. I would prefer for it to be something like 30. Because that is plenty high enough for a High drive dog that is chasing prey. My hope would also be that, that version of the ecollar is cheaper while still being a high-quality e-collar.
