How much should we ask Allah?
-
Imām Mālik رحمه الله said:
“ʿUrwah¹ رحمه الله saw a man praying quickly, so he called out to him and said: ‘Don’t you have anything you need from your Lord? I ask my Lord in my prayer so much that I even ask Him for salt.’”
———————————————
¹ He is: ʿUrwah ibn al-Zubayr ibn al-ʿAwwām رضي الله عنهما. His mother is Asmāʾ bint Abī Bakr رضي الله عنهما. He passed away in the year 94 AH.
-
Imām al-Zuhrī رحمه الله said:
“People loved to gather around ʿUrwah’s speech.”
Hishām ibn ʿUrwah رحمه الله narrated that his father said:
-
“O my children! Seek knowledge. For if you are ˹today˺ the youngsters of the people, ˹tomorrow˺ you may be their elders. What a disgrace! How ugly it is to be an ignorant old man!”
-
Imām al-Awzāʿī رحمه الله said:
“A blister appeared on ʿUrwah’s leg and it spread until his leg was amputated.
-
When it was amputated, he said:
‘O Allah! You know that I did not walk on this leg to any unlawful place, nor did I commit an evil deed with it, ever.’”
-
ʿUrwah رحمه الله narrated ḥadīth from:
-
ʿAlī ibn Abī Ṭālib, Al-Zubayr, ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn ʿAwf, Saʿīd ibn Zayd, Zayd ibn Thābit, ʿAbdullāh ibn ʿAmr, Abū Ayyūb al-Anṣārī, Usāmah, Abū Hurayrah, Ibn ʿAbbās, Muʿāwiyah, Al-Miswar ibn Makhramah, Al-Nuʿmān ibn Bashīr, ʿAbdullāh ibn al-Arqam, and ʿĀʾishah, and many others who are too numerous to enumerate.
