@throwblacktv: Philip Banks grew up as Zeke on a farm in Yamacraw, North Carolina. He was at the Selma riots in 1965. He was at the Watts riots. He heard Malcolm X speak and read every word he ever wrote. Then he won a scholarship to Princeton, graduated Harvard Law, joined the NAACP board in 1975, won the Urban Spirit Award for his civil rights work, and became a Los Angeles County Superior Court judge. The Fresh Prince introduced him as a loud, stubborn, out of touch uncle. But the writers built a man who had actually been in the streets before he was ever in a courtroom. Every time Phil checked Will about the struggle, he was speaking from somewhere real. James Avery played Philip Banks on NBC from 1990 to 1996. The show was set in Bel-Air, Los Angeles, California. #philly #PhilipBanks #FreshPrince #BlackHistory #CivilRights
