I have written a lot about feminism. About the mental load, the wage gap, the motherhood penalty, the systems that are failing women. About what it costs to be a woman in a world that was not built for her. But lately I keep coming back to this. The most feminist thing I will ever do is raise my son. Not because it is the most radical act available to me but because it is the most direct one. Every essay I write reaches women who already know something is wrong. My son is a boy who is still being formed and the man he becomes will move through the world affecting the people around him in ways I cannot yet predict. If I raise him to notice. To own his share without being asked. To understand that the first woman he ever loved is not an obstacle to overcome but a person whose time and labour and inner life are as valuable as his own. If I raise him to cry when he needs to and sit with other people’s pain and show up fully in his relationships. Then I will have done something that outlasts any essay. The patriarchy is not going to be dismantled in my lifetime. But it can be interrupted. In small ways, in ordinary moments, on Sunday mornings at the washing machine when a two year old learns that this house belongs to him too and so does the work of keeping it. I am not just raising a son. I am raising a boy who will one day be a man who exists in the world. And I take that more seriously than anything I have ever written.
