The diaphragm is typically made of a metallic or elastomeric material and is actuated hydraulically, pneumatically, or mechanically by a reciprocating piston. ​During operation, the diaphragm flexes back and forth within a chamber. On the suction stroke, the diaphragm retracts, increasing chamber volume and drawing gas through an inlet check valve. On the compression stroke, the diaphragm advances, reducing the chamber volume and forcing the gas through a discharge check valve at elevated pressure. Because the compression chamber is hermetically sealed from the drive mechanism, contamination-free operation is achieved. ​This design makes diaphragm compressors especially suitable for high-purity, toxic, explosive, or corrosive gases such as hydrogen, chlorine, helium, or specialty process gases in chemical and semiconductor industries.
