I’m always learning about how best to spend time in the backcountry, responsibly 🏔️🌏 I am very conscious of not disturbing wildlife, I always store my food and scented items safely and follow Leave No Trace principles but on a recent trip to the Rockies, I learned about a wildlife encounter I didn’t know about! Porcupines (and other critters) like to eat your sweaty hiking gear… this includes boots, backpack straps, socks, hiking poles, and so on. The reason is because they love SALT🧂!! And your sweaty gear is an easy source for them to enjoy a salty feast. I was under the impression that they liked to eat cork, but it’s actually just anything they can taste salt on… foam hiking pole handles included! So what can you do? 👉🏽 hang gear/poles from bear poles if available 👉🏽 store sweaty gear inside your tent where wildlife cannot reach it 👉🏽 keep hiking poles with you 👉🏽 if there is extra space, store some of this gear inside the bear cache (but please make sure everyone has space for their food/toiletries as this is a bigger priority) We’re all human, and as much time as I spend in nature, I still have lots to learn! My hiking poles took one for the team, so let’s at least take a valuable lesson from it! Happy hiking 🥾 #hikingtips #leavenotrace #responsibletravel #canadianrockies #hikebc
