I think it's important to address a growing trend I'm seeing, particularly for our younger sisters who aspire to join the legal profession. As someone who has worn the niqab since 2017 and has practised as a niqabi lawyer since 2019, I believe we owe aspiring lawyers honest guidance. In Nigeria, there are certain official requirements during the Law School programme and the Call to Bar process. For example, during the Benchers' Dinner and the Call to Bar ceremony, participants are required to unveil for identification and the official proceedings. This is a professional requirement that every law graduate should be aware of before embarking on the journey. Sharing images of a lawyer in full regalia with the face veiled, without this important context, may unintentionally create the impression that one can complete every stage of qualification without ever unveiling. That is not an accurate representation of the current requirements. This is not about discouraging sisters from wearing the niqab or from studying law. Rather, it is about ensuring that we present the reality honestly so that our younger sisters can make informed decisions and prepare themselves accordingly. May Allah grant us sincerity, wisdom, and the ability to guide others with truth and gentleness. Ameen.
