You could be entirely right about this but I think it’s because, the idea of mermaids came from pirate times where one of the ways they referred to women, was as maidens. So that could be the reason for that use of language. They could have shorted the word into maid because mermaiden doesn’t quite have a ring to it like mermaid does. Now the reasoning for how they joined the word mer and maiden, I am lost on. In regards of the merman thing, im not that educated on it because they could’ve named them merlads but they also called men, men back then so im not sure about this part.
