Elisabeth Fritzl, born in 1966, grew up in Amstetten, Austria, under the harsh control of her father, Josef Fritzl. In 1984, at the age of 18, she suddenly disappeared. Josef claimed to the police that she had run away to a religious sect, even presenting a letter written by her—which was later discovered to have been forged under duress.
