Their light, sand toned feathers help them disappear into their surroundings, paired with a thin dark band on the neck and striking orange legs. They are also known for their gentle, whistling calls, which inspired their name. These birds nest directly on the sand, creating shallow depressions where they lay their eggs. Because the nests are fully exposed, they are easy to disturb, which is why piping plovers are considered at risk in many regions. Once the chicks hatch, they are able to move around almost right away, trailing behind their parents as they forage along the shoreline for insects and tiny sea creatures.
