The longer you live in Japan, the more you realize that understanding Japanese isn’t always about understanding the words — it’s about understanding what’s actually being communicated 🇯🇵😂 ☎️ 「電話する時、元気だよね」 On the surface: “You’re energetic when you’re on the phone.” But depending on the tone and situation, it can be a soft way of saying: “You’re a little loud on the phone.” That’s why instead of explaining why I was energetic, I might understand it as a subtle request and say I’ll be quieter next time. 🚃 「終電、間に合うかな?」 It sounds like a simple question about whether you can catch the last train. But in some situations, the real message is: “It’s getting late, maybe it’s time to leave.” So instead of calculating whether we can technically make the train, I take it as a cue to start heading home. 🍽️ 「お腹すいたね」 Literally, it’s just “I’m hungry.” But depending on the context, it can also be an indirect way of suggesting: “Should we go eat something?” Instead of simply agreeing that I’m hungry too, I respond to the possible intention behind it and suggest going for lunch. Of course, these phrases don’t always have a hidden meaning. Context, relationship, and tone matter a lot. But after living in Japan for a while, you start paying attention not only to what people say, but why they might be saying it.
