They were sent in first to draw the Japanese fighters down to sea level, then the dive bombers attacked before the Japanese could get back up to them. The sacrifice of the Devastators changed the course of the war in the Pacific, the Japanese having lost four irreplaceable aircraft carriers. The capabilities of the Japanese zero fighter were well known at the time, and the crews pretty much knew what their fate would be. They went anyways! Their courage and sacrifice should never be forgotten. No greater love than to lay down your life for another.

The Devastator on display at the Midway is the only replica on display anywhere. It was acquired by the museum from Lionsgate productions at the conclusion of the filming for the movie “Midway” (2019). It was a prop created for use on the sound stage and CGI effects. It is made of foam over steel rods…all the rivets are upholstery tacks. Under the canopy is painted the name of the only survivor from Torpedo 8…Ensign George Gay. His character is depicted in the movie that is shown in the “Battle of Midway” Theater - “Voices of Midway”. The Battle of Midway exhibit as you enter the museum reflects the legacy of the ship…as it was named after this historic, decisive, significant naval victory.

We made a lot of impressive hardware during WWII, but our torpedoes were pretty awful, at least at the beginning. We had problems with torpedoes that wouldn’t run straight or failed to arm or failed to detonate even when they solidly connected with a ship’s hull.
